Featured in the sixth novel of Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts series, Straight Silver, Aexe Cardinal is an Imperial Agri-World made up of different nation states. For forty standard years, a war has waged between the Loyalist nations states, known as the Aexe Alliance, and the rogue nation of Shadik. The forty-year war has resulted in the battlefields marked with blasted trees and muddy crater marked earth. Vast trench networks are dug along the frontlines, with both sides fighting a long-drawn war of attrition.
The soldiers of the Aexe Alliance are armed with bolt-action autoguns, solid round weapons, primitive tanks, and propeller-driven aircraft. The Imperial Guard, which the Ghost’s were part of, were sent to Aexe Cardinal to reinforce the Alliance to break the stalemate. Unbeknownst to the Imperial Forces and Alliances, the armies of Shadik were being reinforced by the Blood Pact.

I finished building and painting my second group of Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards miniatures (please see part 1 for more details). As with the previous batch of ‘Les Grognards’, I used these miniatures as proxies for Warhammer 40K Aexe Alliance soldiers. The Aexe Alliance are featured in Dan Abnett’s sixth novel of the Gaunt’s Ghosts series: Straight Silver. Photographs of these miniatures have been added to the newly created Aexe Alliance section of the Old Guard, a Warhammer 40K fan site dedicated to Imperial Guard (Astra Militarum) models of old.

Straight Silver, the sixth novel of the Gaunt’s Ghost series, takes place on the Imperial World of Aexe Cardinal. The Ghosts are sent to Aexe Cardinal to reinforce the alliance of nation states (Aexe Alliance) against the rogue nation of Shadik. Dan Abnett creates a World War 1 feel in this novel, where the battlefields are characterized by vast networks of trenches and heavy artillery. When building and painting these miniatures, I wanted to give the figures a World War 1 trench warfare look, with soiled battle worn uniforms resulting from long periods of fighting in the trenches.
The Old Guard: An Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard Fan Site is a website dedicated to Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40K universe, with a focus on the classic range of Imperial Guard miniatures of old (the second edition of the game).
