Warhammer 40K: Sons of Sek Miniatures Kit Bashing

Inspired by Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghost series, I did some ‘kit bashing’ to create six Sons of Sek troopers.  To build these models, I used the Cadian Shock Troopers, the Catachan Jungle Fighters, the Chaos Marauders and the Bretonnian Men-at-Arms plastics sprues.  

The rank-and-file forces of Chaos in the Sabbat Worlds are recruited from the barbaric tribes of the Sanguinary Worlds.  Components from the Chaos Marauder sprue were used to create the brutal feel and barbaric nature of the Sanguinary World tribes.

The Sons of Sek form the personal army of Anakwanar Sek, a powerful Chaos warlord and lieutenant to Urlock Gaur; the Archon of the Chaos forces in the Sabbat Worlds.  The Sons of Sek were first introduced in the ‘Traitor General’; the eighth book in the Gaunt’s Ghost series.  In ‘Salvation’s Reach’ (book 13), ‘The Warmaster’ (book 14) and the ‘Anarch’ (book 15), the Sons of Sek are the primary antagonists the ‘Ghosts’ face.

In the books, the Sons of Sek are described as large brutes, dressed in ochre coloured combats fatigue.  Their helmets, weapons and gear are standard Imperial Guard issue (likely stolen from Guard storage facilities).  One of the most distinguishing features of the Sons of Sek are their mouths are covered with a hand (this is the symbol of ‘He whose voice drowns out all others’).  In ‘Salvations Reach’, when Gaunt takes a closer look at the slain bodies of the enemy, he discovers the hands worn over the mouths of the Sons of Sek are tanned human hands and the leather components of their uniforms are made from treated human flesh. 

I am planning to ‘kit-bash’ at least four more Sons of Sek in order to create a full squad.  When I have these miniatures completed, I will post these in a future blog post.

White Box Eastern Adventures Sketches and Upcoming Projects

Included in this post are some of my most recent White Box: Eastern Adventures sketches.  The first three sketches will be used for the launch page of the upcoming NPC Townsfolk Generator.  The remaining sketches are for ‘The Keep on the Savage Frontier’ adventure module and the ‘Red Box: Eastern Adventurers’ role-playing game.

Noblewoman/Lady Naoko Ikuta (The Keep on the Savage Frontier)

I was unhappy with my original illustration of the Keep’s Administration, Lady Ikuta (please see April post).  Thus, I re-drew her.  I am planning to use this sketch for both ‘The Keep on the Savage Frontier’ adventure module and the NPC Townsfolk Generator.

The above sketch will be used as one of the interior illustrations for the ‘Red Box: Eastern Adventures’ rulebook.

‘Red Box: Eastern Adventures’ is an RPG game I am working on that will expands on the rules of ‘White Box: Eastern Adventures’, by adding some more ‘crunch’ (rule mechanics) to the game.  While ‘White Box: Eastern Adventures’ is akin to the original 1974 version of the ‘World’s Most Famous Role-Playing Game’, ‘Red Box: Eastern Adventures’ is based on the subsequent iterations of the ‘World’s Most Famous RPG’ (the late 1970s and early 1980s versions of the game).

Having diversity and inclusion in my illustrations are important to me.  While ‘Eastern Adventures’ is based on medieval Japan, the game exists in a fantasy setting; thus, unlike the historical feudal Japan, people from all ethnic backgrounds exist in the setting of ‘Eastern Adventures’.  I drew the two illustrations below to reflect the diversity of the game world.
