Warhammer 40,000 Vostroyan Firstborn: Part 5

Vostroyan Firstborn: Wargames Atlantic heavy weapons

Armed with handcrafted weapons passed down through the generations, the Vostroyan Firstborn hail from the Industrial Hive World of Vostroya. To atone for a sin committed during the Horus Heresy, every Vostroyan family must pledge their firstborn son to serve in the Imperial Guard. It is common for family ties to exist in Vostroyan regiments; it is typical for cousins to serve together, and for new recruits to be mentored by their older battle-hardened relatives.

WargamesAtlantic, a 28mm heroic-scale miniatures company, produces a Napoleonic Wars inspired science fiction set of heavy weapons: the Les Grognards Heavy Weapons.  This set includes three heavy weapons sprues and two optional head sprues, which allows you to build a total of six heavy weapon platforms supported by 12 heavy weapons operators.  Additional infantry upgrade components are included with this set, which includes a portable radio (vox-caster), a sniper rifle, a battle standard, a medical kit, and more.

Previously, I used two heavy weapon sprues to build four Aexe Alliance heavy weapons (please see Aexe Alliance part 3 and part 4 for more details).  With the remaining heavy weapons sprue, I built two Vostroyan Firstborn heavy weapons: an autocannon and a mortar team.  With the six heavy weapon platforms built, I had three operators left over.  Thus, I decided to use the left-over figures to build specialist troops with the infantry upgrade components included with this set.  I built a Vostroyan vox-caster, a sniper, and a guardsman with a powerfist.

Warhammer 40,000 Aexe Alliance Heavy Weapons: Part 4

Aexe Alliance Heavy Weapons (Wargames Atlantic)

Featured in the sixth novel of Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts series, Straight Silver, Aexe Cardinal is an Imperial Agri-World made up of different nation states. For forty standard years, a war has waged between the Loyalist nations states, known as the Aexe Alliance, and the rogue nation of Shadik. The forty-year war has resulted in the battlefields marked with blasted trees and muddy crater marked earth. Vast trench networks are dug along the frontlines, with both sides fighting a long-drawn war of attrition.

The soldiers of the Aexe Alliance are armed with bolt-action autoguns, solid round weapons, primitive tanks, and propeller-driven aircraft. The Imperial Guard, which the Ghost’s were part of, were sent to Aexe Cardinal to reinforce the Alliance to break the stalemate. Unbeknownst to the Imperial Forces and Alliances, the armies of Shadik were being reinforced by the Blood Pact.

Wargames Atlantic’s Les Grognards Heavy Weapons set includes three heavy weapons sprues and two optional head sprues, allowing you to build a total of six heavy weapons teams.  As well, extra infantry upgrade components (sniper rifle, vox-caster, power first, medical kit, etc.) are included with this set, allowing you to build special characters with the Les Grognard infantry set.

In my previous post (part 3 of this series), I build two Aexe Alliance heavy weapon teams (a four-barrel gun pod and a mortar team) from this set, using components from a heavy weapons sprue and optional head sprue.  I recently finished building two more Aexe Alliance heavy weapon teams (autocannon and a second four-barrel gun pod with a female gunner) using the second heavy weapons sprue and components from the optional head sprue.   I have added photographs of these miniatures to the Aexe Alliance section on the Old Guard, an Astra Militarum fan site dedicated to the Imperial Guard regiments of Old.

Straight Silver, the sixth novel of the Gaunt’s Ghost series, takes place on the Imperial World of Aexe Cardinal.  The Ghosts are sent to Aexe Cardinal to reinforce the alliance of nation states (Aexe Alliance) against the rogue nation of Shadik.  Dan Abnett creates a World War 1 feel in this novel, where the battlefields are characterized by vast networks of trenches and heavy artillery.  When building and painting these miniatures, I wanted to give the figures a World War 1 trench warfare look, with soiled battle worn uniforms resulting from long periods of fighting in the trenches.

I recently purchased the Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards Heavy Weapons Set, which allows you to build six heavy weapon teams.  The box set includes three heavy weapon sprues and two optional head sprues.  The heavy weapon sprue contains options for a heavy laser cannon, a three-barrel autocannon, a mortar and a four-gun pod; there are two types of mounts available for the heavy weapons: a wheel mount and a tripod-style mount.

I used the components from one of the heavy weapons sprues (plus a few of the heads from the optional head sprue) to build two heavy weapon teams: a mortar team and a four-gun pod.  I painted the heavy weapon teams as part of the Aexe Alliance (from the Gaunt’s Ghosts series), and have added photos of these miniatures to the Aexe Alliance section in the Old Guard; a Warhammer 40K fan site dedicated to the Imperial Guard regiments of Old.
